Lewis (Lew) Sims



LEWIS BURRILL SIMS
October 9, 1909 - February 24, 2014

Lew Sims, a resident of Chevy Chase, Montgomery County, MD, most of his adult life (79 years) with his wife of 64 years, Grace Wolfe Sims, who passed in 1999. He credits his 104-year long life to "counting his blessings," keeping active (81 years playing tennis) and public service. A singing memorial is planned March 7 at 7:30 p.m. at his residence, MPP, Bethesda, MD.

Lew was born in Minnesota, moved to California, where he attended UCLA for his under-graduate degree in Political Science, where he helped establish Theta Chi as a national fraternity. He completed his master's degree at University of Chicago. He worked for the Public Health Service most of his 38 professional career years and was instrumental in the formation of Montgomery County home rule. In all his years of public service, he never spoke about politics, only good government.

He was a founding father of the American Society of Public Administration and a prominent member of the Washington, DC Chapter of Barbershop Harmony Society, having directed the Singing Capitol Chorus to a National Championship win in 1954.

He is survived by his daughter, Marjorie Weiss and son Robert Sims and his wife Judy Higgins; his grandchildren, Genna Weiss Frishman (William), Geremi Weiss Howard (Peter), and Michael Gregor Weiss (Lisa), Ariel and Matt Sims. He has six great-grandchildren, Summer and Shane Clayton, Annie Mae and Christopher Weiss, Brooke Frishman, and Daniel Howard, aged 3-16, who all live locally.
